The shape of the human body is extremely
important in fashion design, as it enables you to understand how fabric should
sit on the body. By doing life-drawing classes it teaches you proportions that
can then enhance my own stylised fashion illustrations.
We began with doing 5-minute drawings to
help us draw with straight lines and get the feel of it, we then increased the
times and with each drawing they became more and more detailed. The drawing on
the left took 1 hour, and was the most precise and detailed of all of my
pieces. When we was about 50 minutes into it, the tutor mixed it up a bit and
moved us all one space to our left to finish that persons piece, which to be
honest made me very uncomfortable. This was because I was worried that the
person might not like my style of art and in their opinion they might have
thought I ruined it. There was also a small part of me that was worried about
the person finishing my piece, but when the time was up I could see how getting
someone else to contribute was really worthwhile as it makes the image look a
lot more interesting. As you can see from my image I mainly used charcoal for
the fabric and pencil on the body, the girl who contributed to my work also
used pencil but had a very different technique. She used more of a
scribble technique to create shading and made it look textured.
Overall I think that the swapping method
along with the class itself was extremely helpful to my project and also in
improving my art skills.
