Knowing the skills to how the industry works is extremely important in fashion. It prepares you for what life is like outside of education and without this knowledge it is incredibly difficult to become successful.
Working well in a group is one of the most important skills I believe that is needed in the industry, as you are not able to do all the jobs. I was apprehensive at first at being put into groups because I’m quite an independent person and have strong ideas that I like to run with, but once I had met my group I was at ease. We all seemed to have similar ideas about where we wanted to go with the project and we all seemed passionate about the brand. The one aspect that I am nervous about is the fact that we do not have a student in our group wanting to study promotion, so I have taken on that task. But I didn't want to ignore the aspects of the task that I knew I would be good at and would actually enhance my portfolio and sketchbook, so I want to do my own designing alongside the promotional tasks that also need attending to.
I think the brainstorming session that we had was extremely helpful as it got us all talking openly about the ideas that we had. Everybody is normally quite nervous about how their thoughts are going to be received and ultimately worried about their ideas being rejected, but by doing such a wide and open mind map where some ideas have very tenuous links, it allows people to be more open about their own concepts. I personally think that this process made our theme strong and diverse.
The largest inhibition that I had about the project was the size of our group. With only one designer, 2 textiles designers and a make shift promoter I think its going to be really hard to complete all of the processes that go into creating a new collection.
